Pelosi to appear with Richard Gere, her latest celeb meeting

Another celebrity will make their way to the Hill, as actor Richard Gere will appear on Capitol Hill this afternoon to advocate for Tibetan freedom, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) office announced Monday.

Pelosi, Gere, and Lobsang Nyandak, the representative of the Dalai Lama, will speak at the International Campaign for Tibet reception this afternoon at the Cannon House Office Building.

The Gere visit comes after last week’s visit by actor Brad Pitt, who met with the California Speaker to discuss reconstruction efforts in New Orleans.

The ceremony today is meant to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the exile of the Dalai Lama from China, Pelosi’s office said.

Pro-Tibetan demonstrators marched through downtown Washington, D.C. Monday afternoon, carrying both Tibetan and American flags.

Gere, a practicing Buddhist, has been a longtime advocate for Tibetan freedom.

UPDATE: Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is also meeting with Gere this afternoon.
