Daschle: Tort reform part of formula in healthcare deal

President Obama’s would-be leader on healthcare reform, former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), said Monday that tort reform is part of the formula to reform healthcare.

Some liberal blogs have hammered the Obama administration’s willingness to consider limiting rewards on medical malpractice suits, but Dashcle, the former Senate majority leader, said that option must be on the table.

“It’s a very important issue for doctors. It’s important an issue for containing the unnecessary costs that we’re spending today in ways that are directly related,” Daschle said during an appearance on CBS Monday morning. “So, clearly, that is something I’m sure the president will address.”

“Tort reform and all of the related issues, including unnecessary care, are part of that formula,” added Daschle, who withdrew his nomination to become Health and Human Services secretary and White House health “czar” over errant tax filings.

Daschle also endorsed the public (or “government-run”) plan backed by the administration, as well.

“I think that the option of having a public plan is a very, very good idea for controlling costs, increasing transparency, doing the kinds of things to provide Americans the greatest amount of choice,” acknowledging the proposal’s controversial resonance with Republicans.
