President Obama will visit Turkey in about a month, perhaps to deliver his promised speech in a major Muslim capital.
According to various news reports, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said that the president would visit the majority-Muslim European nation, but did not say if Obama would for sure deliver the speech.
“The exact date will be announced shortly,” Clinton said. “We are just at the beginning of planning this decision reached yesterday.”
The New York Times reported in early December that Obama was considering making a speech in a major Muslim capital within his first 100 days in office.
Though Turkey is governed by a secular republic, the nation is 99 percent Muslim. Its Muslims are mostly Sunni, and are within close proximity to Iraq.
