Steele Touts GOP Alternatives on Stimulus

Americans should wonder whether Democrats’ power has gone to their head, new Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele said in the Republicans’ weekly radio address on Saturday.

Steele called on the Congress to pass a package more focused on tax cuts instead of spending increases, saying that much of the stimulative impact of the Democratic package would be wasted.

“When Washington spends the money, some of it might flow into the economy, but, all too often, much gets wasted,” Steele said.

He went on to lambaste “pork barell” programs in the stimulus, and defended Republicans’ having voted against the package in the House.

“This is not a bragging point, but rather a statement that at least Republicans will stand with the American taxpayer,” Steele added.
