Jeb Bush not interested in Fla. Senate appointment

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is not interested in an appointment to Mel Martinez’s (R-Fla.) recently vacated Senate seat according to a new report.

“As Governor Bush indicated earlier this year when he decided against a run for the U.S. Senate, now is not the right time for him to return to public office. In response to your question, Governor Bush is not interested in serving out the remainder of Senator Martinez’s term,” spokeswoman Kristy Campbell told the St. Petersburg Times.

The seat became open when Martinez resigned last Friday. Gov. Charlie Crist (R-Fla.) must appoint a replacement to serve until the 2010 elections. Crist already threw his hat into the ring for the 2010 Senate race and faces former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio in the Republican primary.

Crist has already said he will not appoint himself. Another former governor, Bob Martinez, was reported to be one of the potential appointees.

Martinez was set to retire at the end of his term in January 2011.
