Bono Mack challenger raises $200K

Democrat Steve Pougnet raised a hefty $200,000 in the second quarter in his bid to knock of Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) next year, his campaign announced on Thursday.

“I am humbled by the outpouring of support that I have received in such a short amount of time,” Pougnet said in a statement. “This race will be long and intense. It is going to require a strong campaign, so this is a very good start for us.”

Democrats consider Bono Mack a top target in California next year, in large part because President Obama carried 45th district last year. As we reported in May, they are also very excited about Pougnet, who is currently the mayor of Palm Springs.

Pougnet’s haul may not be too surprising. Before entering politics, Pougnet had a career in raising money for foundations and schools.

Bono Mack, however, has proved resilient. She won last year with 58 percent of the vote despite Obama carrying her district.
