Baker jumps in Mass. Gov. race
Massachusetts Republicans are undoubtedly rejoicing on Wednesday as reports surfaced that healthcare CEO Charlie Baker (R) will run for governor next year.
The Boston Globe reports that Baker sent an email to to his staff at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care saying that he plans to step down from his post on July 17 to take on Democratic first term Gov. Deval Patrick next year.
Bay State Republicans and, privately, even some Democrats have long said that Baker would pose the biggest threat to Patrick next year. Before his stint in the healthcare industry, Baker worked in the administrations of Govs. Bill Weld (R) and Paul Cellucci (R).
Baker’s road to the governorship became a little trickier earlier this week, though, when reports surfaced that Treasurer Tim Cahill, a fiscal conservative to the right of Patrick with gubernatorial aspirations, plans two switch from being Democrat to an independent to set up a third party run for governor next year.
