Dem congressman: Voting for health bill hypocritical

The healthcare reform bill before Congress is hypocritical because it doesn’t require congressional campaign committees to provide insurance for their staffers, Rep. Artur Davis (D-Ala.) claimed Friday.

Davis said he’ll vote against the healthcare bill barring changes to the legislation in a statement released this morning.

“After analyzing this legislation for two weeks, I have come to the conclusion that the House bill is the wrong approach and unless it changes in a substantial way, it will not have my vote on the floor,” said Davis, who’s running for governor of Alabama.

But Davis also said that voting for the bill might be hypocritical when it doesn’t even require the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), and their Senate campaign counterparts to provide insurance.

“The bill does not even require congressional campaign committees to insure their employees, an omission which many of my constituents would find hypocritical,” he said.

Davis said he hoped his concerns may be ameliorated during the August recess, during which he wanted “a far less partisan approach” to emerge.
