Under the radar, Rubio files senate bid

Former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio (R) discreetly formed an exploratory committee to run for the Senate in 2010 a month ago, the Miami Herald reported Thursday.

Rubio had long been rumored to be considering the race for Sen. Mel Martinez’s (R-Fla.). Martinez has said he won’t seek re-election.

Rubio has also hired Alan Mendelsohn, a top fundraiser for former Gov. Jeb Bush (R).

As the Herald wisely points out, by flying under the radar Rubio is able to keep his future options open. If Gov. Charlie Crist decides to run for the Senate, he will immediately become the hands on favorite to win both the GOP nomination and the general election. In those circumstances, Rubio is expected to run for governor.

Congressmen Connie Mack (R) and Vern Buchanan (R) are also considering running for the Senate. Among Democrats, Congressman Kendrick Meek, state Sen. Dan Gelber and North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns are running. Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio is also considering the race.
