Campbell gets a challenger

Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.) will face Beth Krom, an Irvine councilwoman and former mayor, in 2010, the Orange County Register reports.

Campbell’s district had been considered reliably Republican until this year. Former President George W. Bush carried the district with 58 percent in both 2000 and 2004 and Campbell won the seat with 60 percent in 2006 and 56 percent last year. However, President Obama edged out GOP nominee John McCain the district last year with 49 percent, according to CQ Politics’ election results analysis.

Campbell had been challenged by Newport Beach lawyer Steve Young in his past two elections. Young has since said he won’t challenged the incumbent next year.

And, as a side note, it remains to be seen how ‘Atlas Shrugged’ might play a role in the race.
