Coleman not interested in RNC job, voices support for Steele

Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) has not been approached by anyone to take over the Republican National Committee (RNC) from embattled chairman Michael Steele, Coleman’s campaign said Monday.

Coleman’s campaign said that no one has asked Coleman if he’s interested in the job, contrary to reports in other media outlets this morning.

Beyond that, Coleman voiced active support for the work Steele has done so far in charge of the RNC.

“Senator Coleman believes that Chairman Steele is doing an exceptional job, is a strong voice and leader for the party,” Coleman spokesman Tom Erickson said. “And, he looks forward to working with him to build the party when he returns to the United States Senate.”

A three-judge panel is currently considering Coleman’s election challenge to a 200-some vote lead certified by a state election board in favor of his Democratic opponent, Al Franken, in January.

Steele has been a cause of consternation amongst some conservative Republicans for having said in an interview released last week that abortion is an “individual choice.”
