Without Evidence, Rudy Links Obama to Plumber Records Breach

Though he didn’t have anything to back up his claim, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) insinuated Saturday that Barack Obama’s campaign could have been behind illegal searches of Joe the Plumber’s government records.

In conference call with reporters organized by John McCain’s campaign, Giuliani acknowledged there is no evidence that Obama or his campaign had anything to do with the searches of Joe Wurzelbacher’s Ohio records, which were reported by The Columbus Dispatch.

“I don’t know if this came from the Obama campaign or not,” said Giuliani, a former prosecutor. Nevertheless, he added, “We have a right to have an answer to that before the election.”

The Obama campaign firmly denied that any role in the records searches.

“Invasions of privacy should not be tolerated,” said Isaac Baker, the Ohio spokesman for the Obama campaign. “If these records were accessed inappropriately, it had nothing to do with our campaign and should be investigated fully. But these desperate charges from the McCain campaign are just another sign that John McCain is out of ideas, out of touch and running out of time.”
