The return of Kinky Friedman

Brace yourself, Kinky Friedman is back.

The cigar smoking, joke telling, cowboy hat wearing 2006 independent candidate for governor of Texas announced on Tuesday that he’s running again, this time as a Democrat.

In a letter to his supporters, Friedman said that there is nothing funny about the current leadership in Texas.

Friedman is jumping into what is already a high profile race. Currently, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is moving ahead with challenging Perry in the GOP primary. The winner of that race would be favored in the general election. Tom Schieffer, a former ambassador in George W. Bush’s administration, is the only Democrat who has said he is looking at the race.

In the closing remarks of his letter, Friedman emphasized how serious he is about this campaign.

“So I say to Democrats who may not yet take me seriously, I
