Isakson sticking with Senate

The vacuum created by Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle’s (R) withdrawal from the state’s governor’s race isn’t pulling in Sen. Johnny Isakson (R).

Isakson’s campaign told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday that the senator will continue running for reelection and hasn’t taken a second glance at the gubernatorial race, despite persistent rumors.

“There is nothing to this,” deputy chief of staff Joan Kirchner told the AJC. “Johnny is not changing his plans and he is enthusiastically running for re-election to the Senate.”

Isakson launched his reelection campaign two months ago and has a campaign website up, though it does not yet denote what office he is running for.

Cagle, term-limited Gov. Sonny Perdue’s (R-Ga.) individually elected deputy, exited the open-seat race last week after announcing he has a degenerative spine condition. He will instead run for a second term as lieutenant governor.
