Caligiuri: Senate announcement ‘imminent’

Connecticut state Sen. Sam Caligiuri said Friday that an announcement about whether he will challenge Sen. Chris Dodd (D) next year is “imminent.”

“It’s soon,” Caligiuri told the BBR. “Very soon.”

As early as the end of February Caligiuri said he was considering running against Dodd. Connecticut GOP Chair Chris Healy also told The Hill earlier this month that Caligiuri had told to him that he is running.

Caligiuri also dismissed rumors that he has also been considering a run for the House against Rep. Chris Murphy (D) in Connecticut’s 5th District.

“My focus is on making a decision on the Senate, it has not been on the House,” he said. “The only thing I have been thinking about is running for the Senate and I’m going to make an announcement shortly.”

Former Rep. Rob Simmons (R) has already announced he will challenge Dodd and Greenwich businessman Tom Foley, a former ambassador to Ireland, is also said to be looking at the race.

Recent polling has showed Dodd to be vulnerable. A Quinnipiac poll in the middle of the month showed a statistical tie between Simmons and Dodd. A DailyKos/Research 2000 poll released this week showed Dodd five points a head of Simmons.
