No good news for Corzine in latest poll

Things aren’t getting better for New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine (D) in his bid for reelection this year. Corzine trails Republican challenger Chris Christie by nine points – 42 percent to 33 percent – in a Fairleigh Dickinson Public Mind poll released Wednesday.

The poll is the latest in a string that shows Corzine to be in serious trouble. In mid-March, a Quinnipiac University poll showed Corzine trailing by the same margin.

Corzine continues to be dogged by poor favorability ratings and a consensus that the Garden State is heading in the wrong direction. Nearly two thirds of respondents said the state is on the wrong track, compared to less than a quarter that said it is heading in the right direction. A majority – 56 percent – view Corzine unfavorably and nearly half disapprove of his job performance. In particular, Corzine is struggling among independents, who disapprove of his performance by more than a two to one margin (58 percent to 25 percent).

There was a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent in the poll.
