Large percentages of Latino Americans say they feel both the Republican and Democratic parties take them for granted in a new Axios-Ipsos poll released on Tuesday.

Among the Latino Americans who responded to the survey, 51 percent said the Republican party took them for granted while 40 percent said the same for the Democratic party.

A significantly higher percentage of respondents said they felt the Democratic party represented and cared about Latino Americans when compared to the Republican party, with 46 percent saying they believed the party represented their demographic and 45 percent saying they party cared about them.

In comparison, 23 percent said they believed the GOP represented them and 20 percent said they believed it cared about them.

The Democratic party also received an approval nearly double what the Republican Party got when it came to handling the COVID-19 pandemic; according to the poll, 55 percent of Latino Americans said they felt the Democrats were handling the pandemic better while 28 percent said the same for the Republicans.

Both parties received similar ratings of approval from Latin Americans when it came to being good for the economy and handling crime and public safety, with both parties receiving about 40 percent approval and both issues.

Ipsos president of U.S. Public Affairs Cliff Young told Axios that Latino Americans resembled independent voters who leaned Democratic.

“They could very easily be swing voters from election to election, but the issues of race and immigration and the related framing around it has really pushed them away from Republicans,” Young said.

The Axios-Ipsos poll was conducted from Dec. 2 to 14 and included a sample of 1,064 Hispanic/Latino adults. The results of the poll have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
