1939 Superman No. 1 comic sells for $2.6M

A 1939 Superman #1 comic book sold for $2.6 million on Thursday.

The auction hosted by ComicConnect.com showed a buyer, who was not named, bought the rare copy of the comic book for $2.6 million. 

Seller Mark Michaelson said he has kept the comic book in a temperature safe room since he bought the copy in 1979. When the comic book came out in 1939, it was worth 10 cents. 

The cover of the comic book shows Superman flying over buildings with the title “The Complete Story of the Daring Exploits of the One and Only Superman.”

“This is by far the nicest copy of Superman #1 I’ve ever brought to market and is the second highest-graded copy on the census. The cover inks are rich and the interior pages supple. What a thrill that there are still undiscovered comics like this lying dormant,” Metropolis/ComicConnect founder and COO Vincent Zurzolo said.

“What makes this comic even more special is that the consignor met his wife at NYCC twelve years ago at the ComicConnect booth! Talk about serendipity,” he said. 

The sell comes after ComicConnect.com broke the record for highest sold comic book at $3.25 million for a copy of Action Comics #1.
