A record high of $2.7 billion was raised on GivingTuesday this week, ABC News reports.

This annual day of generosity, held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, saw a 9 percent rise in donations, even as Black Friday and Cyber Monday experienced reported declines.

The GivingTuesday organization said that 35 million people participated in this year’s campaign, with the $2.7 billion raised surpassing last year’s record of $2.5 billion.

“Giving is an important metric of civic participation, a way to build the kind of society we want to live in,” CEO Asha Curran told ABC.

Curran added, “Our hope is that this boost of generosity is an inspiration for continued giving, kindness, and recognition of our shared humanity each day of the year.”

The organization previously raised $503 million in May 2020 in GivingTuesdayNow, a special campaign created to help relieve the COVID-19 pandemic’s economic impact, ABC reported.
