FBI: ‘We don’t have all the answers yet’ after remains found in search for Brian Laundrie

The FBI said it “doesn’t have all the answers yet” on Wednesday afternoon after finding unidentified human remains and a few articles belonging to Brian Laundrie — including clothing, a backpack and a notebook — at a nature reserve in Florida that he often visited.

The FBI issued an arrest warrant for Laundrie last month, and he was previously named a person of interest in the homicide investigation of his fiancée Gabby Petito, whose body was found in Wyoming in September. A coroner determined that she was strangled to death.

At a press briefing held at the Carlton Reserve at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the FBI confirmed that they found what “appeared to be human remains” along with personal items, such as a backpack and notebook, in an area that was previously underwater.

The FBI also confirmed that their investigators and other law enforcement authorities will be on location for “several days.”

“Our Evidence Response Team is on scene using all available forensic resources to process the area, it’s likely the team will be on scene for several days,” Michael McPherson, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Tampa office, told reporters.

“I know you have a lot of questions, but we don’t have all the answers yet. We are working diligently to get those answers for you,” he added. 

Earlier on Wednesday morning, Laundrie’s parents went to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park to assist in the search for their son, along with the FBI and the North Port Police Department.

The personal items were found early Wednesday on a trail Laundrie frequented at the reserve, which is close to his family’s home, family attorney Steven Bertolino said, according to CNN.

“After a brief search off a trail that Brian frequented some articles belonging to Brian were found. As of now law enforcement is conducting a more thorough investigation of that area,” he added.

The Sarasota County Medical Examiner’s Offices also confirmed to Fox News that its officials were called to Myakkahatchee Park but declined to share any more information. 

The FBI has also asked the public to “maintain their distance” from the area for a couple of days to protect the integrity of their work.
