American describes being left behind in Kabul: ‘I don’t believe in anybody anymore’

An American left behind after U.S. troops completed their withdrawal from Afghanistan on Monday described her fear and frustration during an interview with CNN. 

“I just found out that they left and I was just silent for a little while,” the woman, identified as Sara, who was an interpreter in the country for 14 years, told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Monday night. 

Sara said she is currently in a house with 37 vulnerable people who still did not know the last evacuation flight had left the country. 

“It is heartbreaking. I just don’t even know what to say to you […] Even they did not tell me that it was the last flight so I had hope that we would leave,” Sara said of herself and others in her house, including a mother with disabled children.

She said she and the group were going from gate to gate at Kabul airport following directions from the State Department, but they did not make it through.

U.S. officials have estimated the number of Americans who wanted to leave but were not evacuated is in the “very low hundreds.” The Biden administration has said it will keep working to get those Americans out of Kabul after receiving assurances from the Taliban that people will be able to leave the country.

But Sara said she doesn’t believe it.

“I don’t know anymore, what to believe anymore. I don’t believe in anybody anymore because they’ve been fooling me for the past 10 days,” Sara said.

“I never felt like this. I went through so many different missions with military, so many different missions and different provinces. I never had that heartbeat like I have it today, this morning, when they told me that America left. They left us to whom? To those people who have always wanted to kill us?” Sara said.

“If America will not help me when they were on the ground, how will they help me now when no one is here?” she added.
