Obama to host COVID-19-compliant birthday party
Former President Obama will be hosting a COVID-19-compliant party for his 60th birthday, following guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the U.S. experiences a new surge in cases brought on by the highly infectious delta variant.
A source familiar with the situation told The Hill that guests at the party, which will be held outdoors, will be required to submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test and that a designated coronavirus coordinator will ensure that all CDC, state and local guidelines are followed.
On Monday, it was reported that President Biden would not be attending Obama’s birthday party on Wednesday in Martha’s Vineyard, as he is scheduled to travel to Delaware that day.
“While President Biden is unable to attend this weekend, he looks forward to catching up with former President Obama soon and properly welcoming him into the over 60 club,” the White House said.
A bevy of high-profile names are expected to be in attendance, including Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney. Obama is known to throw large celebrations for milestone birthdays, having held a star-studded party at the White House when he turned 50.
The former president is expected to be joined by dozens of friends at his 7,000-square-foot mansion set on 30 acres.
The Hill first reported last week on Obama’s birthday plans.
As CNN reported, Martha’s Vineyard is currently designated by the CDC as being in an area of “moderate” COVID-19 transmission. The agency currently recommends that people wear masks indoors when they are in areas of “high” and “substantial” transmission.
