Body of Massachusetts woman found near Arizona hiking trail

A woman in her 30s was found dead on Friday after she had been reportedly missing while hiking a trail in Arizona.

The woman, who was not identified, had been hiking with a man on Camelback Mountain’s Echo Canyon Trail, 12 News reported. The two separated on the trail because she was overheating, and the woman made her way toward the parking lot while he continued on the trail, he told authorities.

The man called police around 1 p.m. after he returned to the parking lot only to find some of her possessions but could not locate the woman.

Around 2 p.m. local time, the Phoenix Fire Department issued a statement on Twitter saying that crews were actively looking for the woman.

“Technical Rescue Teams on scene at Camelback Mnt for reports of a missing hiker. The adult hiker is from out of town turned around halfway up the trail-her group continued hiking. She did not come down to the parking lot according to her group-Crews are actively searching for her,” the fire department tweeted.

Firefighters said that she had come in from Boston and was inexperienced with hiking the trail, according to 12 News.

Phoenix’s fire department issued another tweet later on Friday saying that several hours later the woman’s body had been found off a trail and had been pronounced dead.

“At approximately 4:40pm, after an extensive search, the missing hiker was located off the Echo Canyon Trail, adjacent to a home, on the northeast side of Camelback Mountain. The 30’s female was pronounced deceased and this will now be a death investigation lead by Phoenix PD,” the fire department tweeted.

12 News reported that authorities ruled out foul play regarding the cause of the woman’s death.
