North Carolina mayor says 7-year-old girl bitten by shark

A 7-year-old girl was bit by a shark at a North Carolina beach on Sunday morning but is expected to survive, officials said.

A spokesperson from the office of Mayor Debbie Smith confirmed to The Hill that the young girl was bit by a shark about 11 a.m. in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene, and the girl was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered to be life threatening, according to NBC 6 WECT.

Smith said there were no subsequent shark sightings Sunday and said there were no additional warnings for swimmers, NBC News reported.

A 35-year-old man in California was also hospitalized on Saturday after being bitten by a great white shark at the beach.

The man was swimming off of Grey Whale Cove State Beach when he was bit by a 6- to 8-foot shark.
