One dead, several injured in series of random shootings in Phoenix area: police

One person has died and several people are injured after multiple shootings occurred around the Phoenix, Ariz., area on Thursday.

During a press conference Thursday evening, Peoria Police Department Sgt. Eradon Sheffert police said the shootings occurred in Surprise and Peoria, Ariz., around 45 minutes away from downtown Phoenix.

There are eight different scenes from the shootings.

Sheffert added the same suspect is believed to be responsible for each of the shootings.

The suspect allegedly drove in his vehicle and shot his weapon out the window at cars and people on the sidewalk.

It is not clear if the driver ever got out of his car. There are 13 victims from the attack, Sheffert said.

Four of the 13 victims suffered gunshot wounds. One of the four victims shot has died from their injuries.

The other three are expected to recover, according to police.

The other nine victims had various injuries such as cuts from shrapnel and car accidents that happened during the shootings, Sheffert said. It is not clear how each victim was injured.

The suspect was apprehended by Surprise Police Department after a fire department recognized a vehicle with the description of the one from the shootings.

Police pulled the vehicle over and the driver, who is the current suspect, complied with demands and was taken into custody, according to police.

A weapon was found in the vehicle, but further details are unavailable at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and involves several different departments along with the FBI.

The motive for the shootings is currently unknown, and police said there is no reason to believe there is another shooter involved.
