San Francisco police have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection to the stabbing of a 94-year-old Asian woman.

The police department announced Wednesday that they had arrested Daniel Cauich less than two hours after they found the woman with multiple stab wounds. Police also said that they found a knife close to the crime scene, which they believe was used in the stabbing.

The San Francisco Police Department said in a statement that officers responded to a report of the stabbing at 10:15 a.m. at the 800 block of Post Street.

“Officers rendered medical aid to the victim and summoned medics to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she is expected to survive,” the  department said.

Though authorities did not identify the injured woman, several local news outlets identified the woman as Anh Taylor. The police department confirmed to The Hill that the victim is listed in stable condition.

According to police, Cauich is facing six charges: attempted homicide, battery with serious injury, elder abuse, committing a felony while on bail or release, great bodily injury enhancement and probation violation. CBS San Francisco reported that Cauich “has a long criminal history that includes murder and burglary charges.”

San Francisco police said the incident remains an active and open investigation. Officials reportedly believe it was an unprovoked incident and they’re determining whether race played a role in the crime.

Attacks against Asian Americans have been on the rise in the past year. According to a report from Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, hate crimes against Asian Americans rose almost 150 percent in 16 of the U.S.’s largest cities in 2020.

It was not immediately clear if the suspect was being represented by a lawyer in this case.
