Indianapolis Motor Speedway to host 135K fans, as Indy 500 sells out

Indianapolis Motor Speedway sold out for its race on Sunday and is set to host 135,000 fans.

The venue will be abiding by social distancing guidelines in the stands, requiring masks when a person is not eating or drinking and having strict cleaning processes in place, the organization announced Friday.

“We’ve hit our capacity for this year’s Indianapolis 500 and look forward to hosting 135,000 fans at the world’s largest sporting event since the pandemic began,” race organizers said Thursday, Reuters reported.

“We’re thrilled to welcome fans ‘Back Home Again’ and appreciate our loyal customers and their continued support,” they added.

The 135,000 fans make up 40 percent capacity for the venue as most sports leagues have had to cap capacity for fans due to the virus.

“These measures will make a big difference, but ultimately our success will depend on each individual community member showing respect for one another and making smart, safe and healthy decisions,” the speedway said when the capacity limit was announced.

Last year, there were no fans at the Indy 500 due to the virus, but a drop in case rates and millions of vaccinations have made the limited seating opening possible this year.
