Hate crimes up 73 percent in New York City

Hate crimes are up 73 percent in New York City and arrests for hate crime cases are up 160 percent this year compared to 2020, the New York City Police Department reported.

The NYPD released numbers on Monday showing 180 hate crimes from the beginning of the year to May 2, The Wall Street Journal reported.

That number is up from last year’s 104 hate crimes during the same time period, the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force said.

The rise in hate crimes is mostly from attacks on Asian Americans and Jewish people.

There have been 80 hate crimes targeting Asian Americans from Jan. 1 to April 4. There were only 16 hate crimes against Asian Americans during the same time period last year.

Jewish people were the second most targeted so far this year, but their overall numbers are actually slightly down from last year.

There were 54 hate crimes against Jewish people from Jan. 1 to May 2 in 2021, down from 58 hate crimes during the same time period in 2020, according to the Journal.

There have been 78 arrests involving hate crimes this year compared to 30 arrests last year.
