A suspect in a Monday hit and run in Portland, Ore., was taken into custody after allegedly killing one pedestrian, officials said.
The Portland Police Bureau said a driver, who attempted to flee on foot, was taken into custody after allegedly hitting other vehicles and pedestrians around Southeast 33rd Avenue and Southeast Pine Street.
A detective reported that one of the pedestrians hit by the vehicle died at an area hospital, according to a statement. Portland Fire and Rescue reported that up to six pedestrians were hit.
Police said the driver crashed near Southeast Stark Street and Southeast 18th Avenue and fled on foot, but witnesses of the incident “corralled” the suspect before officers arrived.
Information about the arrest is expected to be released “at a later time,” according to a statement.
The incident resulted in one critical injury to an adult who later died from their injuries, Portland Fire and Rescue reported. Two other adults with minor injuries were taken to a local hospital.
Police first received calls about a pedestrian being hit at about 1:02 p.m. before calls came in about hit and runs involving the same vehicle hitting cars and other pedestrians.
The bureau said the crime scene “is very large and spans dozens of city blocks.”
