Majority in new poll says Trump did not ‘Make America Great Again’

Most of the Americans surveyed in a poll released early Wednesday said that President Trump failed to “Make America Great Again,” his signature campaign promise and slogan, during his four years in office.

In the Politico-Morning Consult survey, released as President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office at noon, 57 percent said Trump “definitely” or “probably” did not make the country “great again during his time as president.” Approximately 4 in 10 — 39 percent — said he definitely or probably did, while 4 percent were undecided. 

Eight in 10 registered Republicans told pollsters they thought Trump had “Made America Great Again.” Slightly more than one-third of independents agreed, as did just 12 percent of Democrats.

The results come as the country remains beset by political turmoil as a result of the historic deadly rioting by Trump’s supporters at the U.S. Capitol and an ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has claimed more than 400,000 American lives.

Almost half of respondents — 46 percent — told pollsters that Trump’s presidency would likely be remembered among that of the worst of U.S. presidents, while 9 percent said he was simply below average. Still, 1 in 5 Americans said that he will be remembered as “one of the best presidents,” and 13 percent said he was above average.

The Politico-Morning Consult survey was conducted between Jan. 15-17 among 1,993 registered voters across the U.S., and has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
