Trump tells aides to never mention Nixon after comparisons
President Trump has reportedly told aides to never mention President Nixon after comparisons have been made between both men’s final days in office.
Trump has reportedly made clear to aides in “separate conversations” that even mentioning Nixon was banned, CNN reported, citing people around the president.
According to the news outlet, he told one adviser in an expletive-filled rant to never bring up Nixon, the only president to ever resign from office, again. On mentions of Trump resigning, the news outlet also reports that Trump told people that he couldn’t count on Vice President Pence to pardon him like President Ford pardoned Nixon.
The White House didn’t immediately return a request for comment from The Hill.
Nixon resigned in 1974 after the House Judiciary Committee began impeachment proceedings over his refusal to hand over taped calls that prosecutors said connected him to the 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters. After assuming office, Ford pardoned Nixon.
The report comes as Trump’s final days in office have been overshadowed by a mob of his supporters that breached the U.S. Capitol last week.
Five people died as a result of the riot, including a Capitol police officer. Dozens have been arrested, and the Justice Department has charged 70 cases thus far.
The House voted 232-197 to impeach the president over his role in inciting the riot, making him the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice. The vote came after Pence dismissed calls to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump.
Meanwhile, Trump, who has faced numerous calls to resign, released a video on Thursday disavowing the mob.
“No true supporter of mine could ever disrespect law enforcement or our great American flag. No true supporter of mine could ever threaten or harass their fellow Americans. If you do any of these things, you are not supporting our movement. You are attacking it and you are attacking our country,” Trump said.
