5 injured after gunfire erupted at warehouse party with up to 200 people in California

Five people were injured after gunfire erupted at a warehouse party with up to 200 people early Tuesday morning in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police said gunshots were reported at 12:40 a.m. at the party, which illegally hosted 100 to 200 people in a warehouse in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood, CBS Los Angeles and ABC affiliate KABC reported. Shots were reportedly fired inside and outside of the building.

Police found five people at the scene, three women and two men between the ages of 20 and 39, with gunshot wounds. All five were taken to area hospitals, the Los Angeles Police Department told The Hill.

“All five were treated,” LAPD Capt. Jay Mastick told reporters, according to CBS Los Angeles. “One was in serious condition but is now in stable condition. All the victims are expected to be OK.”

Witnesses told CBS Los Angeles they heard 30 to 50 gunshots that smashed several car windows in the area.

Police said the shooting may be gang-related.

The shooting comes almost a week after Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) threatened to shut off the utilities of buildings that held large gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Los Angeles Department of Public Health reported 1,920 new COVID-19 cases and 19 deaths on Monday.

A block party with hundreds of people ended in Washington, D.C., on Sunday when at least four shooters fired into the crowd, hitting 22 people, including one teenager, who was killed.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said the party organizer may face charges for violating the mayor’s order on the size of gatherings.
