Four more Marlins test positive for coronavirus: report

Four more Miami Marlins players have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of positive cases associated with the Major League Baseball team to 17.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal first reported the news, which sources confirmed to ESPN.

As of Monday, the team had 11 players and two coaches who had tested positive for coronavirus. Miami was scheduled to play its home opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday but that game was canceled and Tuesday’s game has been postponed. The Marlins were in Philadelphia playing against the Phillies over the weekend. 

As a result, the Phillies’ home games against the New York Yankees on Monday and Tuesday were postponed. ESPN reported that no Phillies players or staff have tested positive for COVID-19.

MLB began its abbreviated season last week after not being able to start in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The league is slated to have a 60-game season, but the outbreak found in the Marlins has cast doubt on those plans.
