A West Virginia University football player tested positive for the coronavirus on Monday as the team restarted voluntary workouts, the school said.

The unidentified student athlete will enter a 14-day period of self-isolation, the Mountaineers athletics department said in a statement

The school said contact tracing procedures were initiated to identify additional players who could have been exposed. Those players will also be required to self-quarantine.

At the end of May, West Virginia announced protocol for players to return for voluntary workouts. The workouts began Monday for the players who tested negative for COVID-19, the school said.

The school’s fall semester begins Aug. 19. When students return to campus, they will be required to wear masks on campus and in class, according to The Associated Press.

All students, faculty and staff must also be tested for the virus before they return to campus and complete a coronavirus education course, according to the AP.
