Federal offices in DC closing at 1 due to winter storm

Federal offices in Washington, D.C., are closing at 1 p.m. due to an expected winter storm Tuesday, the Office of Personnel Management announced.

All employees are required to leave the office four hours before their normal departure time and no later than 1 p.m. Federal offices are scheduled to close at that time.

Specific non-emergency employees will still be required to telework and will only receive weather and safety leave for the time it takes to commute home. Emergency workers are required to stay on site, according to the OPM release.

The first winter storm of 2020 to hit the nation’s capital is expected to drop a mix of rain, snow and sleet in the area, WJLA reported. Several areas including D.C.; Arlington, Va.; Falls Church, Va.; and Alexandria, Va., are under a winter weather advisory from noon to 7 p.m.

The storm is expected to produce up to 2 inches within the Beltway area and the timing of the storm between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. comes right at rush hour, according to WJLA.
