Nine people dead in South Dakota plane crash

Nine people died, including a pilot and two children, in a plane crash in South Dakota. 

Twelve people were onboard a Pilatus PC-12 midday Saturday when the plane crashed in Brule County, South Dakota as it was flying from Chamberlain to Idaho Falls, Idaho, Brule County State’s Attorney Theresa Maule Rossow confirmed to The Hill. Survivors of the incident were taken to Sioux Falls for treatment, and details on their status were not immediately available.

Rossow also confirmed that the Federal Aviation Administration has been notified. 

“The men and women of law enforcement, first responders and medical professionals should be commended in their heroic actions to rescue the victims in extreme weather conditions,” she said in a statement, the Washington Post reported.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the plane crash, but storms in the region were preventing officials from assessing the scene right away, agency spokesperson Peter Knudson confirmed to the Washington Post.

The National Weather Service warned of ice, snow and winds as fast as 40 mph for the weekend as travelers board flights for the Thanksgiving holiday.
