Father of Atatiana Jefferson dies weeks after his daughter was killed by Texas police officer

Marquis Jefferson, the father of Atatiana Jefferson, died from a heart attack Saturday at the age of 59.

His death comes just weeks after his daughter was shot and killed in her own home by a white police officer in Fort Worth, Texas, according to CNN.

Family spokesman Bruce Carter confirmed the passing of Marquis Jefferson, telling the news outlet that Jefferson succumbed to, I don’t know, I can only say a broken heart.”

{mosads}”He just never recovered from the grieving process,” he said. Atatiana Jefferson was his only child.

Atatiana Jefferson died in her home last month when then Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean shot and killed her through her window. She was playing video games with her nephew when in the early morning hours when the incident occurred.

The officers were responding to a report of an open door at her residence. Dean reportedly didn’t identify himself as a police officer before telling her “put your hands up! Show me your hands!”

Dean resigned from his job shortly after and is charged with murder.

Following his daughter’s passing, Marquis Jefferson obtained a temporary restraining order that gave him full authority to make arrangements for her funeral and burial.

“He was battling to be a part of her life to the end,” Carter said. “I think it just got the best of him.”
