Albuquerque’s new taqueria stirs controversy with ‘Bad hombre’ taco, ‘Lock her up’ burrito

A restaurant in New Mexico has garnered backlash for naming menu items after phrases commonly used by President Trump.

At Urban Taqueria, located in Albuquerque, customers can order tacos including the “Executive Privilege,” the “Bad Hombre,” “The Immigrant” and “Fake News.”

Among the selection of burritos is “The Wall,” “No Collusion,” “Lock Her Up” and “Under Audit.”

The new restaurant quickly sparked complaints from nearby residents, including a man who said it’s “not good” in light of the current political climate, local news station KOAT reports.{mosads}

University of New Mexico professor Patricia Perea told the outlet that normalizing the terms would be harmful by “potentially turning them into funny or humorous terms, and the more you do that, the more likely people are to repeat them and perhaps forget the contexts in which they are said.”

The taqueria has also spurred criticism from social media users, including one Twitter user who blasted the eatery for “alienating some potential customers.”

Hanif Mohamed, Urban Taqueria’s owner, told KOAT that the unconventional names were “not designed to insult people or hurt people, but it’s just meant to keep the conversation going as to what’s happening around us.”

During his presidential campaign against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Trump repeatedly used the refrain “lock her up” in reference to the Democratic White House nominee. Since taking office, he has repeatedly gone after critical media coverage he dislikes as “fake news.”

Trump also coined the phrase “bad hombres” — his way of referring to migrants with criminal histories — in pushing for stronger deportation efforts.
