A resort in the Dominican Republic where a Delaware woman claimed to have been beaten unconscious in January will close temporarily, citing low occupancy, according to the Delaware News Journal.

The Majestic Elegance Punta Cana resort said in a letter to travel agencies that it will shutter on Aug. 15 with a tentative Nov. 7 reopening date, according to the newspaper.

{mosads}In a May Facebook post, Tammy Lawrence-Daley of Wilmington posted photos of her injuries, saying she was strangled and beaten to unconsciousness there.

“I was kicked in the head, I was beaten with a club, and then strangled again for the kill,” Lawrence-Daley wrote in a post that was shared more than 146,000 times.

Lawrence-Daley filed a lawsuit in July against Majestic Resorts, seeking $3 million for her injuries, according to the newspaper. Said Victoria Kurtz, one of the lawyers representing Lawrence-Daley, of the temporary closure, “I think it speaks volumes to the public’s reaction to the resort’s mishandling of this situation.”

In the letter, Majestic Resorts said occupancy at its three Punta Cana locations would likely dip 60 percent in the second half of August as well as September and October, citing “thousands of cancellations” and accusing the media of inflating “isolated issues.”

“We have taken this issue as an opportunity to rethink and improve for the future,” the letter states.
