Two parents arrested in Alabama after apparent back-to-school road rage shooting

Two Montgomery, Ala., parents were taken into custody Thursday morning over a road rage incident that led to a shooting in a school parking lot, according to WSFA.

The episode began when their vehicles were pulling into Blount Elementary School’s parking lot, Sgt. Jarrett Williams told the outlet, with one eventually pulling a gun and firing at the other.

Tom Salter, a spokesman for Montgomery Public Schools, said the suspect then went into the building as well and turned their gun over to office staff, who kept it in a safe until police arrived on the scene.

No one was hurt or killed but a vehicle was damaged during the dispute, according to Williams. Both parents have been taken into custody but their names have not yet been released and what charges they will face remains unclear, according to Williams, who added police are still determining exactly what happened.

The school was briefly placed on lockdown during the incident, which occurred as parents were dropping off their children. After it was lifted, Salter said parents were given the option of whether to allow their child to attend school the rest of the day.

“It is in my opinion that the more normal the day for the child, the better. If you feel that it is really necessary to come get your child, you are welcome to do so,” he said. “You’re never 100 percent prepared for any situation or tragedy, but I think the system worked today.”
