Georgia elementary school took heat for photos of ‘appropriate’ and ‘inappropriate’ hairstyles for black students

A Georgia elementary school is getting backlash after it hung a poster dictating “appropriate” and “inappropriate” hairstyles for black students. 

A parent of a student at Narvie Harris Elementary School in Decatur, Ga., took a photo of the poster and shared it with her hairstylist, Danay Helena.

Helena posted a photo of the poster to Facebook, where it has since been shared thousands of times.

“Hair is a form of self-expression, shouldn’t be a right or wrong way,” she wrote in the post.

{mosads}The school has since taken down the photo, the DeKalb County School District told CNN in a statement.

“The poster was the result of a miscommunication relating to appearance rules at the school,” the statement said. “Once the district was made aware of the poster, it was immediately removed. In addition, a letter was sent to parents clarifying the school’s dress code and appearance policy.”

According to the school’s dress code, students are not allowed to wear clothing, piercings, jewelry or other articles that “disrupt the educational process or endanger the health or safety of other students.” Hairstyle is not mentioned.

The incident comes as states including California have passed bills adding discrimination based on hair associated with race to their anti-discrimination laws.
