Boehner won’t say whether he’d back Biden over Trump

Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) demurred on whether he would support former Vice President Joe Biden in a 2020 election match against President Trump in an interview with CNN Thursday.

“There’s a lot of ‘ifs’ there,” Boehner, who retired in 2015, told CNN’s Ana Cabrera in a joint interview with former Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.). “If ‘ands’ and ‘buts’ were candy and nuts, every day would be Christmas.”

{mosads}In the same interview, Boehner said there was not “room in America” for the chant of “send her back” that erupted at a Trump campaign rally Wednesday night as Trump decried Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).

Trump said Thursday he disavows the chant despite allowing them to continue.

However, Boehner demurred when Cabrera asked if a series of tweets from Trump Sunday, in which he told Omar and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) to “go back” to other countries, were racist.

“He has a little different style than I have, let’s put it that way,” Boehner told Cabrera.

Since leaving Congress, both Boehner and Crowley, who lost a Democratic primary race to Ocasio-Cortez in 2018, have worked as lobbyists for the cannabis industry, with Boehner sitting on the board of Acreage Holdings and Crowley named to the advisory board of Northern Swan Holdings, an investor in the industry.
