Report: Two tanks in DC as Trump calls for military hardware in July 4 parade

At least two tanks have reportedly arrived in Washington, D.C., days after President Trump called for an Independence Day celebration involving military hardware. 

The M1A1 tanks are alongside four other military vehicles on a freight train in the city, The Associated Press reported, citing an AP photographer. 

A military official told the news service that the tanks, which are being guarded, were brought up to Washington from Georgia’s Fort Stewart.{mosads}

Trump said Monday that he wanted military tanks to be part of Washington’s Fourth of July event this year. 

“We’re going to have some tanks stationed outside,” Trump said during a bill signing in the Oval Office. “You’ve got to be pretty careful with the tanks because the roads have a tendency not to like to carry heavy tanks. So we have to put them in certain areas.”

Washington’s city council on Monday tweeted its opposition to bringing military tanks to the event, citing the potential to damage local infrastructure. 

Trump has said he plans to give remarks at the Lincoln Memorial during the holiday in an event dubbed “Salute to America.”

He previously expressed desire for a military parade to honor the 100-year anniversary of the World War I armistice, but the plan was discarded after lawmakers expressed concern and a reported price of $92 million.
