German chancellor seen shaking in public for second time

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was seen shaking at a public event Thursday, marking the second time the leader has experienced tremors at events in less than two weeks.

Merkel, 64, was seen shaking as she appeared at a farewell ceremony for German Justice Minister Katarina Barley. Reuters captured Merkel clutching her arms together to limit the tremors as she stood with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier Thursday.

Merkel rejected a glass of water from an aide during the event and continued to stand and take pictures with German officials. She also looked relaxed at the following ceremony to swear in a new justice minister, Christine Lambrecht.{mosads}

A spokesperson for Merkel told Reuters the chancellor was fine and she still planned to travel to Japan for the Group of 20 summit with world leaders this weekend.

She later left on a flight to Osaka for the meeting, Reuters reported.

“Everything is taking place as planned. The chancellor is well,” the spokesperson told the news organization.

The incident came as Germany faces a record-breaking heatwave. The country reached its highest-ever June temperature Wednesday at 101.5 degrees, CNN reported.

Merkel was first seen shaking on June 18 as she greeted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin. NBC News shared footage on Twitter.

The chancellor told reporters she was feeling fine after appearing at a joint press conference with the Ukrainian leader.

“Since then I’ve drunk at least three glasses of water, which I apparently needed, and now I’m doing very well,” Merkel said.
