One in 2 million blue lobster found in Massachusetts seafood restaurant

Blue lobsters are about one in 2 million, but one appeared this week in a Massachusetts restaurant.

Nathan Nickerson III told CNN he had received his typical seafood shipment for his Eastham restaurant, Arnold’s Lobster and Clam Bar. But he was shocked when he saw the bright blue lobster sticking out among the rest.

“I said, ‘I think we have something special here,’ ” Nickerson said. “I couldn’t believe the color.”

{mosads}Nickerson wants to keep the rare lobster on display at his eatery until he donates it to an aquarium, CNN reports. He plans to give it to the St. Louis aquarium “out of respect to the St. Louis Blues,” who just won their first Stanley Cup.

He told CNN that while others want him to release the lobster back into the wild, he believes the surrounding waters near Cape Cod aren’t very livable.

“We want this lobster to stay alive and stay safe,” he said.

While lobsters typically appear in shades of red, green and brown, about one in 2 million are blue because of a genetic defect, according to the University of Maine’s Lobster Institute.
