‘SNL’ targets Buttigieg’s appearance on ‘The View’

“Saturday Night Live” featured a skit with Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg for the first time over the weekend, making fun of the candidate’s appearance on “The View.”

Actor Paul Rudd played the South Bend, Indiana, mayor, and playfully referenced Buttigieg’s background as a “Harvard-educated, multilingual, war veteran Rhodes scholar,” saying he represents “everyday Americans.”

The cast of the popular daytime talk show “The View” was played by SNL cast members. The ABC show has become a noteworthy stop for 2020 candidates, with Buttigieg joining other candidates, such as former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) and former Vice President Joe Biden, who have made appearances.

{mosads}Rudd’s portrayal of Buttigieg, who at 37 is the youngest declared candidate in the crowded Democratic field, took some lighthearted jabs at the upstart candidate’s age.

He helped Joy Behar, played by SNL cast member Kate McKinnon, fix her phone by simply deleting some of her 8,000 unread emails.

McKinnon’s Behar in the sketch also pointed out that Buttigieg is openly gay.

“I wouldn’t be running for president if I didn’t believe America was ready to accept not only a gay man but a boring gay man in the public eye,” Rudd said Saturday while wearing Buttigieg’s customary digs of a blue tie and a white collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up to show he is “ready to work.”

The show’s hosts then chanted as Buttigieg’s husband, Chasten Buttigieg, made an appearance, played by SNL cast member Beck Bennett.

The skit, however, ended poorly for Buttigieg, as all hosts of “The View” started fantasizing about Biden and his possible presidency.

Buttigieg first appeared on the show in real life in January, before he officially announced his candidacy.
