President Trump reportedly once described his daughter and top adviser Ivanka Trump as “like a Democrat” to congressional leaders.
A new book from Politico reporters Anna Palmer and Jake Sherman details a 2017 White House meeting at which the president joked about his daughter’s political leanings.
{mosads}As then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) entered a meeting with Trump and top House and Senate Republicans, the president made the joking comment about his daughter, according to an excerpt from “The Hill to Die On” reported by People magazine.
“After [Pelosi] walked in the door, Trump said, ‘I’ve gotta get Ivanka,’” according to the book. “When Ivanka eventually entered the room in the middle of the discussion, Trump said, ‘You know my daughter Ivanka. She’s like a Democrat.’”
The comment is similar to others reported in recent months. Journalist Bob Woodward explained in his 2018 book “Fear” that the president regularly joked that his daughter and her husband, White House adviser Jared Kushner, were Democrats.
Ivanka Trump, who has been described as a “one-time Democrat,” is known to have tried to push a more moderate influence on her father’s policy, including pushing him to remain in the Paris climate deal.
But another new book on the Kushner family reported that Trump directed his former chief of staff John Kelly to “get rid off” the pair of advisers and send them back to New York.
