Donations flood Parkland after apparent suicides

A campaign to support the family of a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student has more than tripled its fundraising goal in the wake of two apparent suicides by teenagers who survived the Parkland, Fla., school shooting last year.

The GoFundMe campaign in honor of Sydney Aiello was launched on Wednesday with a fundraising goal of $20,000 and has raised more than $73,000 as of Sunday.

{mosads}Aiello’s mother Cara Aiello told local news on Thursday that her daughter, who was 19, killed herself last weekend.

Aiello told a CBS affiliate that Sydney Aiello, who survived the February 2018 shooting that killed 17, struggled with survivor’s guilt and had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

On Sunday, police reported the apparent suicide of another student who had survived last year’s mass shooting, according to the Miami Herald.

The unidentified student was a sophomore and reportedly took his life on Saturday night.

The parents of several of the victims of last year’s shooting responded to the suicides by urging more suicide awareness and training.

Ryan Petty, the father of a 14-year-old girl who was killed, told the Miami Herald “the issue of suicide needs to be talked about.”

Andrew Pollack, also the father of a female student who was killed in the mass shooting, asked students to get help.

“I don’t want any parent to feel how I feel. You’re loved,” he tweeted.
