Dutch officials considering terrorism motive after shooting in tram

At least three people have died and nine others have been reported injured after a gunman opened fire inside a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht on Monday.

Dutch authorities are investigating a “possible terrorist motive” in the shooting, according to the BBC and other reports. 

{mosads}Authorities released a photo of a Turkish-born man on the tram as a suspect in the shooting. The 37-year-old has been identified by police as Gokmen Tanis, according to The Associated Press.

The suspected gunman is reportedly still at large.

Dutch authorities have raised the city’s threat level to its highest possible rating of five in the city, which is about 25 miles southeast of Amsterdam.

The police is investigating the shooting at the #24oktoberplein in Utrecht this morning. An possible terrorist motif is part of the investigation.

The prime minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, called the shooting “an attack on our tolerant and open society,” according to CNN.

Utrecht Mayor Jan van Zanen said three of the nine people injured in serious condition.

The shooting comes just three days after attacks at two mosques in New Zealand left 50 dead and dozens of others injured.
