Homeless man accused of scamming thousands on GoFundMe arrested

Johnny Bobbit, the homeless man accused of being involved in a plot to scam thousands out of donors on GoFundMe, was arrested in Philadelphia on Wednesday, local ABC affiliate WABC reported.

Bobbit has been accused of conspiring with a New Jersey couple in a scheme that raised more than $400,000 on GoFundMe last year.

Bobbit and the couple, Mark D’Amico and Kate McClure, claimed that they were creating a crowdfunding campaign in order to assist Bobbit, a homeless Marine, that the couple said had given McClure his last $20 to help her after she ran out of gas. Prosecutors say the three were actually scheming to trick unsuspecting donors. 

{mosads}A New Jersey judge on Tuesday issued a warrant for Bobbitt’s arrest after he did not show up at a mandatory court appearance that day, according to WABC.

The Burlington County prosecutor’s office not says it will extradite Bobbit to New Jersey, the outlet reported.

The allegedly fictitious story inspired donations from more than 14,000 people totaling around $402,000. 

Online fundraising website GoFundMe last month said that it has returned over hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations for the cause, which prosecutors claim was a scam.

McClure, D’Amico and Bobbit have been charged with second-degree theft by deception and conspiracy to commit theft by deception.
